Alleppey is one of the most important tourist centers in the state, with a large network of inland canals earning it the sobriquet “Venice of the east”. These large network of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. Alleppey was one of the busiest centers of trade in the past with one of the best known ports along the malabar coast. Even today it retains its charm as the centre for Coir carpet industries and prawn farming. Alleppey the ideal headquarters for backwater tourism as well as for visits to the lovely church filled town of Kottayam, and the town of Aranmula, famous for its historic Aranmula Snake Boat Race which is an annual event.
Vembanad Lake : One of the largest lakes in India, the Vembanad Lake is India’s longest lake and also the largest lake in all of Kerala. The districts of Allepey, Kottayam and Ernakulam border the lake.
The Vembanad Lake is at the centre of Kerala Backwaters tourism with houseboats crowding it.The town of Allepey, bordering the lake, is considered to be the Venice of the East because of the large network of canals that amble through the town.
Alleppey Beach: also known as Alappuzha Beach is one of the most visited beaches of Kerala. To the west of the beach lies the Arabian Sea and along with it a large network of lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers located nearby. In addition, this beach is also known to be the busiest coast of entire Kerala. Moreover, the canals and the backwaters of this beach make possible the business of tea and rubber throughout.
Kayamkulam Lake: One such place is the Kayamkulam Lake- it is spread over an area of 60 sq km and is one of the most scenic backwaters in Kerala. The lake, which lies in both the Allepey and Quilon district, is a shallow lake which merges with the sea at the Kayamkulam barrage. Stretching between Panmana and Karthikappally, the Kayamkulam Lake has an area of 59.57 sq km, a length of 30 km and an average breadth of 2.4 Km. It connects the Ashtamudi Lake by the Chavara-Panmana canal.
