Vembanad Lake is commonly known as Vembanad Kayal or Vembanad Kol. It is one of the longest lakes in India and the largest in Kerala. This lake is called by different names like Punnamada Lake in Kuttanad and Kochi Lake in Kochi. The Kochi Lake also houses the Kochi Port, which is situated around two islands of Vallarpadam and Willingdon.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also known as the Vembanad Bird Sanctuary. It is located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake in Kottayam. Sprawling over 14 acres of land in the basin of the Kavanar River, the sanctuary is counted amongst the largest bird sanctuaries in India. It is situated in the vicinity of the Kumarakom Village and provides shelter to around 91 species of local birds and 50 species of migratory birds.
